When be will kidney transplantation needed ?

As the kidneys lose their ability to function, fluid, waste products, and electrolytes begin to build up in the blood. Dialysis should begin before kidney disease has advanced to the point where life-threatening complications occur. This usually takes many months or years after kidney disease is first discovered, although sometimes severe kidney failure is discovered for the first time in people who were not previously known to have kidney disease.

Who is eligible for kidney transplant?

To be an appropriate candidate for a kidney transplant, the individual should meet some criteria

  • The individual should not have any serious underlying medical conditions like cancer, advanced heart disease, liver disease, uncontrolled mental illness, etc.
  • The individual should not smoke, consume alcohol or use illicit drugs.
  • The individual should not be of advanced age.

What are the types of kidney transplant?

There are two types of kidney transplant:

  • Deceased-donor kidney transplant
  • Living-donor kidney transplant(ABO Compatible & ABO Incompatible)

Patients who are not candidates for kidney transplantation or who have to wait for a Donor can usually be treated with either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
